English 2159

Summary: For my professional writing class, I was tasked with writing a rhetorical analysis on two articles about the flu. The piece was read by my peers and my professor. It was an individual writing assignment with the intent of showcasing my rhetorical analysis skills. I was tasked with analyzing the purpose of the articles, intended audiences, and to identify the utilization of rhetorical devices in each article. Even though I am a law major, I am including rhetorical analysis in my e-portfolio to showcase my core writing skills. My English classes taught me the basic writing skills needed for my law writings and it is important to also showcase my foundational writing skills.

Reflection: Throughout this piece of writing, I learned how to better identify the utilization of rhetorical devices such as ethos, pathos, and logos along with gaining valuable feedback. I also learned how to go more into depth with my analysis. The feedback I received was that I did not go into enough depth when analyzing intended audiences of the articles. For instance, article one was more intended for medical professionals working directly with patients. I gained the realization that it is acceptable to go more in depth in an analysis and it will seem too lengthy. Throughout the assignment, I considered the intended audience I was writing for more so than I would have in my past pieces of writing. I reminded myself throughout the assignment that the audience I was writing for did not have knowledge of the articles that I was analyzing and that I had to go into detail for them to gain an understanding of the pieces of writing.
